Mahi- Mahi are in town

Some people aren't huge fans of catching or eating mahi-mahi, because they see it as a type of dolphin, when in reality it's a dolphinfish (also widely known as "dorado"), and not even related to a Flipper-style dolphin.  Red Bailey, of the Lakewood Ranch Fishing Club, is shown to the left holding some of the school of mahi-mahi he caught using chunks of sardines, in about 150 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island.

Steve Miller, also with the Lakewood Ranch Fishing Club, holds his trophy red grouper below.  The Lakewood Ranch Fishing club has had adventures with Capt. Larry before, which you can read about here & here.  The club also caught large red grouper & some mangrove snapper.

Below is Jackie Nords, posing with a bull shark she caught offshore of Anna Maria Island, in about 100ft waters. Jackie is from Cincinnati, Ohio & is a student from Notre Dame.  She was here on summer vacation with friends catching amberjacks, grouper, snapper and more sharks while fishing with Capt Larry.

This post just goes to show, there's quite a variety of fish out there to be caught, so whether you are down with the Mahi-Mahi being in town, maybe want to make a shark week of your own, or just want some tasty fish to throw on the grill, Capt. Larry can lead you to the promised land of better living through good fishing!

Vacation or Staycation... Fishing is where it's at!

As we ease into fall, Capt. Larry's charters are still enjoying the hot summer smoker kingfish.  Below we see Ken Bennett & Josh Brown (both from Bradenton), with their kingfish they caught offshore Anna Maria Island.  The big kings hit a free-lined sardine that was sitting the rod holder while they were catching their limit of grouper- as well as some snappers, and an 8 ft nurse shark. Every summer we usually hook up a few of these giant mackerel, but are usually more of a fall and spring break catch. Its a beautiful thing when the plan comes together!

Cassidy Muller is shown below holding one of her FIRST groupers she's ever caught!  She was visiting from Caldwell, New Jersey, & it's safe to say the family had a great vacation while fishing with Capt. Larry.  This red grouper was caught using a sardine, in about 50 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island.

When Mark Priede & his family were on vacation from Cincinnati, Ohio, with they caught a lively & varied group of fish while on their charter; bull sharks, grouper, snapper & quite a lot of amberjacks!  Mark is pictured with his first amberjack he caught while using a butterfly jig, in about 150 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island.

Whether you're in the Tampa Bay area for a vacation or you live here year round, a fishing trip with Capt. Larry is the perfect way to enjoy the great outdoors with friends/family.  As it starts to cool down, there will more types of fish just aching for a hook to bite... It's up to you to make it your line that has that big fish on it!

Oooh Barracuda!

One of the fish Capt. Larry often gets asked about it is barracudas.  Perhaps because of their fearsome reputation, they are a source of interest for many people, whether they are from the local area or just visiting.  Ernie Sbaschik from Tampa, got to see this beast up close & personal when he caught  a barracuda recently on a trip with Capt. Larry.

Before the barracuda was caught, it managed to eat three of their hooked groupers. Ernie and party were fishing in about 85 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island, and besides the toothy barracuda pictured above, they also caught many red and gag grouper, snapper and a feisty tiger shark that was carefully released.

To the left is Capt. Larry holding two nice gag groupers caught using sardines in about 80 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island (photo by Bill Evans). On the same trip, they also wrangled more gag and red grouper, plus some miscellaneous snappers, sharks, and two smoker kingfish. The grouper bite was so hot Capt. Larry had to go back for more  after his charter ended! Now is the time to come on out and you get some of this sweet gag grouper action.

Putting the hockey sticks down & picking up the fishing pole

When they aren't on the ice playing hockey for the Tampa Bay Lightning, Kieth Aulie, Victor Hedman, Pierre-Cedric Labrie and Alex Killorn are fishing with Capt. Larry!  Here they are holding a 6 ft spinner they caught and released using a live blue runner.

The team also caught & released some other impressive sharks including bull, blacktips and more spinners (like the one pictured above),  plus an abundance of amberjacks. Capt. Larry & the hockey players were fishing in about 120 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island, using a variety of large live baits, which clearly worked out pretty well.

Have your own shark week celebration like they did & fish it up big with Capt. Larry.  Also, make sure you get your fill of gag grouper while the season is still open
