So THAT'S what he's talking about...

Just like the temperatures, offshore action is on fire! Capt. Larry's parties are burning up their reels with the immense amount of fish that have been biting.... They've been catching almost everything this time of the year, from gag and red grouper, to kingfish, Spanish mackerel, cobias, and that wonderful variety of snappers- amberjack, mangrove, yellowtail and lane snappers. Best of all, the parties have been getting what the tourists love to catch most of all- SHARKS! If you missed the post about the most recent bull shark caught on Capt. Larry's boat, check it out here! The blacktip shark below, though of a different kind & smaller is still a fish you would not want to be caught swimming with! From left to right is Lydia Beachum and Judie Beachum, posing with blacktip sharks they caught about 7 miles offshore of Anna Maria Island, using on pinfish. Lydia shows us that it doesnt matter how big or small you are, you can still catch a massive beast of a fish... or two!
Further proving that size doesn't matter, the kingfish below is proudly being held by 11 yr old Harry Duxbury, visiting all the way from England! It was Harry's first kingfish, and was caught with a sardine in about 40 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island. Certainly much different waters than what he is accustomed to; Capt. Larry was pleased he could help make a lasting impression of what fishing in America is REALLY like!

The action heats up quickly, starting at 40ft to 70 ft for the kings. Capt. Larry's summer plan of action is anchoring up on a honey hole he knows from past experience to be loaded with grouper and snapper, to catch the multitude of tasty bottom fish, and follow that up by deploying a chum block... from there, all Capt. Larry and his party's need to do is stand at the ready on the flat lines & wait for the king mack attack!

TIP OF THE WEEK: Someone asked Capt. Larry recently "How do you find as many kingfish on a regular basis?" He jokes that they don't look for smoker kings, THEY LOOK FOR US! But in all seriousness., with a good chum slick on the waters, the kingfish really do come looking for you. Once the kings are around the boat, Capt. Larry's parties catch them on spoons, gotcha lures and variety of live bait- i.e. blue runners & cigar minnows as dessert to keep the kingfish around for the whole meal, and to keep them jumping in the boat! On a recent trip, a huge kingfish was hiding under the boat trying to eat our Spanish mackerel while it was being reeled in. Capt. Larry truly made lemonade out of lemons by sending the mackerel back out on a stinger rig with larger hooks.... and THEN it was on! End result: a 35 lb smoker screaming the reel, and later in the boat. In Capt. Larry's own words: "That's what I am talking about!"

No Bull... It's a Bull Shark!

Capt. Larry started off June with a bang, by gracing the cover of Woods n Water magazine, which can be viewed here or picked up at a gas station like Circle K! Also, Show Me The Fish Charters is now on facebook, so "like" it to keep your finger on the pulse of Capt. Larry's sweet fishing action!

Speaking of some fantastic fishing action, On May 10th, John Fordham from Bradenton caught a humongous bull shark, that conservatively measured about 9 ft, and was around the 300 lb range... The fight for this beast lasted no less than 3 hrs on 60 lb test, while using a live 2 lb blue runner for bait, fishing in about 90 ft waters offshore of Anna Maria Island. John managed to wrangle it to the boat for a photo shoot. Those of you who enjoy swimming on our fine gulf coasts keep an eye out, as this bull shark was released alive, to fight (or bite) another day!

While on the subject of monsters, check out the monster gag grouper below, around 25 lbs, that Mary Johnson (also of Bradenton) caught in 40 ft, approximately 7.5 miles offshore of Anna Maria Island, fishing with a sardine for a tasty treat the grouper apparently enjoyed quite a bit! Mary's party also caught massive amounts of mackerel, snapper, other groupers, & kingfish (click here to see Mary with her king of a kingfish), on a unbelievable 4 hr charter with Capt Larry. Though the trip only lasted four hours, the memories that Mary made, not to mention John with his beast of a bullshark, will last a lifetime! For the firetruck red grouper, the best bite is out about 130 ft, using large pinfish. If you get bored when the grouper bite slows, Capt. Larry finds downsizing his tackle to 25lb test and changing the bait to sardines... that will lead to all-you-can-eat-snappers! During spring and early summer, anything can happen; this is can include, but certainly not limited to catches of speckled trout- up to the limit, which are heartily available in the bay, Spanish mackerel all the way down the beaches, as well as everything that's hitting offshore of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key. This is the perfect time of the year for a variety of fish, so don't spend this beautiful weather inside, come out, bait up & GET YOU SOME!

Abundance of Amberjacks

While operating out of his new & improved location, the Bradenton Beach Marina, Capt. Larry and his fishing parties have been catching their limits of amberjacks, while going offshore, out past 100 ft on the wrecks, springs and large ledges. There, they also find monster mangrove snappers, along with a smattering of yellowtail snappers, cobias, big sharks, and impressive red groupers. That same party also caught more amberjacks, grouper and a cooler heaping full of mangrove and yellowtail snappers.
The amberjacks have been so thick, Capt. Larry's charters have practically been beating them off with a stick! Check out George Cummings from Anna Maria Island with his epic amberjack he caught using a live pinfish in about 120 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island. George and party was on a charter during a scorcher of a day, and it seems the hotter the weather, the hotter the fishing action!
Inside 9 nautical miles [state waters] you'll be in the midst of a myriad of keeper gag grouper, plus some monsters mixed in to toughen you up. It's important this time of year to always keep a flat line out with a large, live bait. Last week Alex Simard, fishing here all the way from Italy, hooked up a serious sailfish on a live blue runner on the free line. It's a common occurence during the summer, make sure you aren't caught with an empty flat line, or- even worse, no flat line at all! So folks, keep your lines tight while the weather is paradise, because life is good, fishing is fantastic... NOW is the time to come on out and get ya' some of this awesome action!

King[fish] of the Sea

One of Capt. Larry's favorite fish to catch is by far kingfish... they put up a hearty fight, make for impressive pictures, and though it's not the best fish to eat, it does indeed have a distinct taste. Below is Eathan Way with an awesome example of the might King[fish] of the sea he caught recently. He was using a sardine in about 50 ft waters, offshore of Anna Maria Island. That same party also caught more kings, a variety of groupers, as well as snapper while on their charter.Even the fire chief of Ephraim, Wisconsin, Niles Weborg, got into the spirit of KINGFEST by catching the beast you see below. Chief Weborg was also selected as the "pic of the week", and duly so! Niles was using a sardine in about 70 ft waters, offshore of Anna Maria Island. Capt. Larry has been finding that frozen sardines have been working exceptionally well lately, to catch up to the limit of a wide variety of fish, ESPECIALLY the kingfish. During that same charter Chief Weborg went on, the party also caught many more kings, but a nice mixture of groupers & snapper.The larger red grouper and red snapper are out past 130 ft currently. Though live pinfish have been bringing in mountains of fish lately, it's still efficacious & a sure-fire bait to start out with frozen sardines as you're getting the party started. Bottom fishing has been "the place" to hit an immense amount of amberjacks; seems that's where they have been hanging out, but no place is safe from a Capt. Larry charter! Below is Fritta Crotty, with a nice-sized Kingfish she caught using a sardine in about 40 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island.
Even though his location has changed, Capt. Larry's results are the same... he leads his charters out to the right place, at the right time, to bring in an epic catch. In a nutshell: fishing is fantastic, life is good, & now is the time to come on out and get your fat grouper and snapper for your next BBQ, all while experience the trip of a lifetime!

To Catch A Predator...

"Mr. Shark, have a seat right over there," Chris Hansen from Dateline would say if he encountered the most dangerous predator of the seas. Instead of talking to the sharks, Capt. Larry & his fishing parties CATCH sharks- and a wide variety at that!

with a nice blacktip shark he caught recently using a live pinfish in about 115 ft waters, offshore of Anna Maria Island. Tom and the party also caught more sharks, grouper, snapper and amberjack while on their charter, and overall just had a fantastic, memorable time.





In the picture below (from left to right), is 13 yr old Riley Besecker from Buffalo, NY, with his feisty blacktip shark caught using a live pinfish. Assisting him with the holding of this blacktip beast is the first mate, Larry Bethke. THe party had been fishing in about 165 ft offshore off Anna Maria Island. All day long the anglers had been battling (AND caught) a nice mixture of yellowtail snapper & amberjack plus battled many larger sharks in the 250 lb range.



While on the same trip, 8 yr old Noah Besecker, also from Buffalo, is pictured below with his first flounder, caught near Coquina beach using a live grunt. Though not as impressive as a shark, flounder are fantastic eating, and in this case this flounder certainly qualifies as a "trophy"! The party had a great trip & caught a bounty of gag grouper and snapper offshore. However, it was when Capt. Larry stopped near the beach that Noah hooked this trophy flounder and a few sharks.
The fun these kids had on their fishing trip is almost tangible while looking at their happy faces in the pictures. Your son or daughter have a birthday coming up? Give them the gift that will have them grinning from ear to ear not only during the trip, but afterwards as well. What kid wouldn't want to catch something they can eat later & then tell stories about for years to come? It truly is the gift that keeps giving!

Crab Crackin' To Help The Mackeral Attackin'

BIG NEWS for Show Me The Fish Charters: Capt. Larry is now operating out of a new location, the Bradenton Beach Marina; click the link to check out the new digs, or stop by if you're in the area. One thing that hasn't changed about Capt. Larry's charters is that the anglers are suffering sore muscles from big mack attacks! From young & new fishers, to experienced seasoned anglers, the invasion of king mackerel is serious business & requires more than a little effort! While fishing in about 40 ft to 70 ft waters, the parties have been catching this immense amount of king mackerel on a variety of live baits, as well as artificials... The schools- running about an average of 35 lbs, can't seem to satisfy their appetites! Each trip we seem to always hook into a few real smokers; it's not always an easy task when they are cutting through steel leaders, straightening hooks, busting up tackle... like rowdy teenagers, they're hungry & causing real chaos! Below is Stephenie Franco from Westfield, Indiana, with one of our first kingfish of the season, so congratulations are in order! This proud angler-ess caught her kingfish using a sardine, in about 50 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island.
We usually start out catching grouper and snapper as we are bottom fishing on a hotspot & deploy a chum bag (Capt. Larry's Tip: Anytime you get to crackin' open crabs or shrimp, save the shells and add to your chum.... the fish LOVE it like a special treat!), which always seems to draw the kings to the boat. Tip #2: always have a couple of flat lines with select live baits behind the boat to entice & hook the pelagics, make them come to you! When the flat lines go off- you'll know, as your reel drags will be screaming. On Show Me The Fish trips, it signals the start of a Chinese fire drill of sorts; pulling in all the other lines that were bottom fishing (usually several folks fighting grouper), so the angler on the kingfish [the running game] are able to fight it unobstructed, ensuring that the serious game fish is successfully caught! If someone tangles the angler up while (s)he is fighting a smoker, Capt. Larry throws down the flag on an interference call to protect the #winning. Below is Mary Johnson of Bradenton holding the mighty game fish. She caught this kingfish using a sardine about 40 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island. Mary and that party also caught more kings, large gag grouper up to 25 lbs, red grouper and some tasty snapper.

Regularly Capt. Larry's also catching girnormous firetruck red grouper, as well huge gag (all while still staying inside 9 miles), cobias, amberjacks, & a variety of large sharks usually out past 100 ft along with tasty snappers, porgies, triggerfish and sea bass. The weather is sunny & perfect, the fishing is more than great which = "life is good!" Now is the time to come on out and get ya some of this wild and crazy action!

Kingfish & Cobia Cometh Again!

On Show Me The Fish Charters, Capt. Larry & company have caught their first cobia of the year! This momentous event happened on 3-24-11, in about 125 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island. While the party was catching snapper and amberjacks, a huge school of cobia came near the boat, and Capt. Larry cast a Zara Spook magnum surface lure to cobias... almost immediately the largest one grabbed the lure! The captain then handed off the pole to Bud Northway, from Clarence New Hampshire, for a serious fight AND what became the catch of a lifetime, all while using 25 lb monofilment line during a 45 minute battle royale. Below are the proud anglers, taking all three of the men to hold up this monster cobia caught by Bud Northway; he's on the left, with Stu Ambrose in the middle, assisting with the brute, and John Northway on the right. On that same trip we hooked up a 8 ft lemon shark, after an hour long battle with almost everyone taking turns on the beast of burden. Once one angler got tired, the rod would be passed to a buddy & they would take over for a while; now that's real extreme sports entertainment! Below is an approximately 75 lb amberjack that Chris Braun (left) caught, with an assist by Eric Smithman & Alex Braun (left to right), all from Bradenton, FL. These hard core anglers asked for big fish for their first offshore trip and their wish was more than granted! During that trip, the satisfied fishers were dropping line in about 200 ft using pinfish and also caught a plethora of snapper and large sharks.
Just a few days ago we encountered our first king Mack Attack(TM), with a school of kingfish swimming around the boat. Capt. Larry's party caught 8 kingfish, while fighting many more that got away to be caught another day. Some of our other special species caught on recent trips: Spanish mackerel, snappers and catch-and-release gag and red groupers. The kings are hitting around 50 to 60 ft and we are still fighting big amberjack, and a wide variety of sharks- blacktip, bull and lemon sharks up to 8 ft out past 100 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key... Needless to say, this is a beautiful thing & exactly what we're looking for! Now is the time to come on out and enjoy paradise.
