Fish we are thankful for

Thanksgiving is a great time of year- delicious food, time with family & friends, and a day when we can all reflect on things we are grateful for.  Wonderful weather that's not too hot or cold, waters that are full of action packed fishing, & stone crab season (it opened Oct. 15th) are just a few of the many things to give thanks for.  Kingfish right off the beach is something else to be thankful for!  Not many people are aware of how many kings are this close inshore (don't tell anyone!), and the best time to fish for them is when we have a strong east wind & the seas are too large for the kingfish to go further offshore.  Might as well stay in closer & let the island block the winds... this allows YOU to be "king" of the beach!

Above is Megan Crane from WIlloughby, OH, with the first kingfish she's ever caught!  She was using a freelined sardine directly off Anna Maria Island.  Megan & her family also experienced a bountiful harvest of more kingfish, as well as other fish.

Mark Scovill is thankful for the grouper he caught while here from Grand Rapids, Michigan.  He's pictured above holding the gag he caught using sardines in about 50 ft offshore Anna Maria Island.  On the same trip with Capt. Larry, Mark & the party he was fishing with caught their limit of grouper & some miscellaneous snapper.

No tricks, only treats!

Thought there's fishing in England, it's just not quite the same as the fishing in Tampa Bay waters.  Nathan Bowman- from London, England is pictured at left with his first kingfish, and it's an impressive one at that! The big king hit a free-lined sardine in about 60 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island. Nathan also caught his limit of red grouper and some snapper while fishing with Capt. Larry. 

Along with the kingfish & cobia, gag grouper are on the move, going closer inshore. To the right is Bill Evans from Bradenton, with his limit of monster gag grouper. He caught these beasts in about 50 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island using live grunts and pinfish. The party also caught more gag and red grouper, kingfish, mackerel and snappers.

Below is the Captain himself, holding a bright American Red Snapper he caught during the recent mini-season. He was using a sardine in about 125 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island. On that same trip, they also caught many large red grouper, a few gag grouper, scamps, lane and mangrove snapper.
