It's definitely a positive thing when amberjack is not something you lack! Lately, that has certainly been where the greatest action has been- amberjacks and snappers. When we go offshore, not only are we getting a plethora of amberjacks, but also all the banded rudderfish we can handle, with some mangrove snapper, porgies, triggerfish, and various kinds of sharks mixed in. Usually, we are out about 100 ft offshore, using live baits, when we are getting these scaly beasts.
The picture to the right, is of Phyllis Tinstra, holding the biggest amberjack that was caught that day; lately it's the ladies that catch the biggest fish on my trips! Below (from left to right) is Richard Dykhoffe, Larry Tinstra, Phyllis Tinstra, and Jim Meiger, with a whole slew of good sized amberjacks. They were caught about 120 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island, using live pinfish.
Thanks,
Capt Larry McGuire

Gag Grouper Catches Are as Good as it Gets!
We have been catching our limit of gag groupers on every trip lately! Along with those huge gag grouper, we've also been getting red grouper, mangrove snapper, porgies, amberjacks (catch and release only, since they are not in season), and sharks! Live baits have been working the best, but cut bait, sardines, and quit have also been producing amazing catches. The action has been amazing at pretty much any depth where there are serious rocks, but especially so from 40 ft on out to 100 ft. Amberjack season started back up on New Years Day, but grouper season closed in the Gulf of Mexico on February 1st (until March 31st of this year), so we've really been concentrating on getting those this past month. The pictures attacahed are of 13 year old Molly Fava and her largest gag grouper. She caught this beast using a live pinfish, 80 ft offshore of Anna Maria Island. She caught the two largest grouper in the party! Ladies do seem to catch the largest fish on my boat. The other picture in this post is (from left to right) Lee Wilder, Doreen Fava, Molly Fava, Karl Fava, Mike Schmitt, and Bob Gilbert; in the picture is only PART of their catch of gag groupers. This party had a few more they could not hold up for picture time. Now is definitely the time to come out and get some of the best offshore action of the year and get your large catch, that will give you memories that stick with you for a lifetime! Thanks and I hope you had a Happy New Year,
Capt Larry McGuire
